Coni Kalinowski, M.D.

Dr. Kalinowski is a Board certified psychiatrist specializing in community services for people having psychiatric disabilities. She completed her residency in psychiatry at University of Wisconsin in Madison, and went on to serve as Medical Director of the Mobile Community Treatment Team at the Mental Health Center of Dane County in Madison, Wisconsin.
In 1990, she was recruited to become the Medical Director at the Stanislaus Integrated Services Agency in Modesto, California, a pilot program funded by the California State Department of Mental Health. There she developed and implemented a program of client-directed prescribing of psychotropic medications in support of the agency's client-directed psychosocial rehabilitation approach to services. Through her involvement with SISA, Dr. Kalinowski has been invited to give numerous presentations, workshops, and consultations concerning client-directed services and integrated services organizations.
Dr. Kalinowski served as Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, and director of the Kujichagulia Project, a community service program modeled after the ACT and ISA teams, that provided culturally proficient, integrated mental health services to consumers of African descent who would otherwise be referred to long-term institutional settings. She went on to become Director of Community Clinical Services for the State Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services for the state of Maine. She then returned to clinical practice in California.
Dr. Kalinowski has served on the faculty of Project GEO of the McLaren Graduate School of Management at the University of San Francisco, presenting, with Lori Shepherd, M.S., the skills unit on "Psychiatric Disabilities and the Assesment of Abilities." She has also been a presenter and consultant of the State of California Department of Mental Health/Department of Rehabilitation Cooperative Program since 1994 on the subject of the impact of psychotropic medications upon rehabilitation and employment.
Dr. Kalinowski has written a number of articles and training manuals regarding psychopharmacology, psychosocial rehabilitation, client-directed services, and power dynamics in mental health services. She is presently an independent psychiatric consultant in San Jose, California.
