Darby Penney

Darby Penney's work for the last three years has focused on the history of psychiatry from the perspective of consumers, survivors, and ex-patients. She founded the C/S/X Oral History Project in 1999; in 2003, she and her colleague Steve Periard received an award from the New York State Board of Regents for Excellence in Documentation for the project's work in collecting over 200 c/s/x oral histories. Darby recently produced a video and curated an exhibit, both entitled "Here Lies?: Abandoned Asylum Cemeteries." With Peter Stastny, M.D., and photographer Lisa Rinzler, she is working with the New York State Museum on the exhibit "Lost Cases, Recovered Lives: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic, opening in January 2004. Darby is president and executive director of The Community Consortium, a non-profit group working to end marginalization and promote true community integration for people with psychiatric labels.
