Pathologizing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People: Homophobia and Transphobia in the Mental Health System

Shannon Minter, J.D., Legal Director, National Center for Lesbian Rights and co-presenters

This panel explores the harms inflicted on individual LGBT people by homophobic and transphobic attitudes and practices in the mental health system. These range from forced institutionalization & treatment of gender variant children and LGBT youth to more subtle forms of discrimination, such as discouraging clients from identifying their sexual orientation in group settings, failure to protect LGBT youth from harassment, failure to respond appropriately to the heightened risk of suicide among some LGBT youth, and treating LGBT youth as sexual predators. The panel will also provide information on the mass marketing of so-called reparative therapy by therapists who claim to be able to cure homosexuality to parents and adults. The panel will include survivors as well as legal experts and advocates.
