Implementing a Pace/Recovery Philosophy

Laurie Ahern and Daniel Fisher, M.D., Ph. D., Co-Directors of the National Empowerment Center
Track: Alternatives and Empowerment

Implementing a PACE/Recovery Philosophy. The goal of the existing mental health system is maintenance and compliance which is based on coercive treatment. The prevailing philosophy of a biological basis of mental illness leads to life-long professional treatment centering on medication. In contrast, this workshop will describe the implementation of a PACE/Recovery philosophy that enables people to completely recover from what is called mental illness. The presenters, who have both recovered from "mental illness" will share their most recent publication, a recovery implementation manual funded by the MacArthur Foundation.
