Bringing ADA Litigation on Behalf of Deaf Clients

Susan Stefan, J.D., Center for Public Representation, Jennifer Mathis, J.D., The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, Lucy Wood, J.D., Advocacy, Inc., and Dale Boam, J.D., Disability Law Center, Inc., Boston, MA.

Deaf clients of the mental health system are routinely relegated to non-accessible residences, services, and programs. This violates the Americans with Disabilities Act in a number of ways. This workshop will discuss the law, regulations and case law interpreting the Americans with Disabilities Act as it relates to mental health clients who are deaf, as well as difficult policy questions that emerge in attempting to design a remedy.
