Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Consumer/Survivors: Rights? Action!

Alicia Lucksted, Ph.D., Center for Mental Health Services Research, University of Maryland-Baltimore

This workshop will combine presentation and facilitated discussion about the needs and advocacy of lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender (LGBT) people receiving mental health services, especially in public systems. We will focus on (1) describing the current situation, (2) the challenges of improving the "treatment" LGBT people receive in many mental health systems, (3) implications of LGBT anti-discrimination laws for mental health services, (4) actions that consumers/survivors and their allies are creating to empower themselves and address the problems. Participants will be encouraged to add in their own experiences and views, and we will try to develop concrete ideas for constructive actions that everyone can "take home."
