The U.N. Meeting on a Disability Convention

Judi Chamberlin, National Empowerment Center, and Celia Brown, NARPA Board, Bronx, NY.

The United Nations is currently in the process of developing an International Convention on the Human Rights of People with Disabilities. A convention is the highest form of international treaty, and would recognize that people with disabilities are particularly disadvantaged in the protection of their human rights. The presenters ,who have participated in U.N. sessions, will discuss the process and its implications for the recognition and protection of our human rights. In addition, a broad coalition of disability organizations, including those representing people with psychiatric disabilities are deeply involved in influencing this process.
